I’ve Been Reincarnated

I began my career in education as a pre-k teacher.  I spent 3 years at the front gate of public education,  appreciative of the opportunity to inspire the youngest of learners.  They, in turn, inspired me.
After completing my degree in literacy, I was motivated to take my newly learned skills to the next level.  With a transfer to the first grade; I was able to spend another 3 years renewing  my passion for literacy in a classroom of emerging readers.  I watched those 6 yr olds grow in to fluent readers; their energy fueled my belief in the value of early education.
I’ll be taking that energy with me when I return to work school in the fall.
I’ve been reincarnated.   I will be returning as a kindergarten teacher.
I like to prepare, so I’ve been researching the NYS kindergarten curriculum.
This is the best I have discovered, so far…

The kindergarten curriculum, according to Robert Fulghum:

1. Share everything.
2. Play fair.
3. Don’t hit people.
4. Put things back where you found them.
6. Don’t take things that aren’t yours.
7. Say you’re SORRY when you HURT somebody.
8. Wash your hands before you eat.
9. Flush.
10. Warm cookies and cold milk are good for you.
11. Live a balanced life – learn some and drink some and draw some and paint some and sing and dance and play and work everyday some.
12. Take a nap every afternoon.
13. When you go out into the world, watch out for traffic, hold hands, and stick together.
14. Be aware of wonder. Remember the little seed in the styrofoam cup: The roots go down and the plant goes up and nobody really knows how or why, but we are all like that.
15. Goldfish and hamsters and white mice, and even the little seed in the styrofoam cup – they all die. So do we.
16. And then remember the Dick-and-Jane books and the first word you learned – the biggest word of all – LOOK.”

With all the lay-offs in our district, the opportunity to move to kindergarten opened up and I felt I could bring a lot to that ‘in between’ grade. (In between the other 2 grades I’ve taught, pre-k and grade 1).

I am fortunate to keep the same classroom I’m in AND I get to ‘keep’ my amazing classroom aide!

I look forward to learning all that is kindergarten! Send me any notes, ideas, or suggestions!! OR better, yet-
We should plan a kindergarten brainstorming session. 🙂
